They have been desperate to extend the war in Afghanistan into neighbouring Pakistan—in so called “hot pursuit” of Afghan rebels.
For the last two years unmanned drones have been raining death on the border regions. Now there are regular incursions of western troops and helicopter gunships while the Pakistani military have launched an offensive on the tribal areas. Thousands have died and hundreds of thousands have fled. This dangerous spread of war can only plunge the region into further chaos. For there to be a chance of peace the occupation of Afghanistan must end.
