Socialist Worker ran the headline “Teach Yourself Polish” over two decades ago. It was urging workers in Britain to follow the example of Solidarnosc, the mass trade union which so valiantly challenged the then Stalinist regime.

This week we carry a centre spread reporting from Poland on the growing challenge to a

pro-Western government, which presides over a neoliberal economy.

Polish migrants are generally held up as a problem, targeted by a racist campaign which falsely claims they are taking our homes and hospital beds while driving down wages.

The truth is that Polish workers can help provide a shot in the arm to trade unions and all those resisting Gordon Brown’s free market crusade.

We can learn from the nurses who took over Warsaw’s centre to defend their health service or from miners who occupied their pit to win a living wage. We can stand together in opposing both governments’ commitment to George Bush’s war in Afghanistan.
