The return of Jon Venables to jail for breaching his parole licence has created a storm in the right wing media. Venables and Robert Thompson killed two year old James Bulger in 1993, when they were just ten.

They were sentenced to be detained “at her majesty’s pleasure”, and released in 2001.

The media is now attempting to recreate the lynch mob atmosphere of 1993.

Then prime minister John Major said, “Society needs to condemn a little more and understand a little less”, and the children were dismissed as “pure evil”.

The Sun newspaper has launched a campaign against the “rules protecting killers who reoffend”. Many are demanding that Venables’ new identity is revealed.

If it is revealed, it will put his life at risk by the mob whipped up into fury by the tabloids.

This is happening despite no one knowing why Venables was returned to prison.

The right wing are jumping on the memory of the Bulger tragedy to say that anyone who commits such acts will always remain “bad”—that it is in their nature.

For the ruling class this is much easier than really understanding the causes of crime and doing something about it.
