‘I’ve put radical politics to people on their front doorstep’: Vote Miça Evans in Ealing

Miça Evans has worked as a mental health nurse in the NHS for nearly 10 years. She knows first-hand how public services have been slashed by relentless cuts. It’s one of the reasons she chose to stand as a candidate in the local elections in Ealing, west London, next month.

The Ealing Community Independents is a new political party in west London, which has been endorsed by Your Party. It stands for investment in public services—and against cuts, closures and privatisation—and for equality and social justice.

“I’ve been out canvassing and talking to the community about the issues that matter to them. Through this process, I’ve been able to put radical politics to people on their front doorstep,” she told Socialist Worker.

Miça, a member of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP), is standing in the South Acton ward and using the elections to boost working class fightbacks.

There were two campaigns in particular she is helping to build. One is opposition to the closure of ten of Ealing’s children’s centres. The other is to stop the closure of the Michael Flanders Centre, a day service for people with dementia.

“One of my five pledges is to stand against austerity and cuts to local services,” she said. “Ealing Community Independents has launched a campaign to save the Michael Flanders Centre and people have been really receptive and supportive of it.

“Last month, we held a protest outside the centre to get signatures to save this really vital service.

“Building these two big campaigns against closures, that can continue even after the elections, is one of my key aims.”

Mica has pledged to fight for better pay and conditions for workers and safe homes for all, and to stand against the rise of racism and fascism.

And the Ealing Community Independents have made opposition to genocide and war a focus—including demanding the Labour-run Ealing council divests its pension funds from companies linked to Israel.

Miça has helped to mobilise people against the far right in Brentford and West Drayton as part of West London Stand Up To Racism.

“We need to continue to prioritise stopping Reform UK and encouraging people to get out on the streets to oppose Tommy Robinson on 16 May,” she said.
