Around 60 people protested against council cuts in Liverpool on Friday of last week.
The protest targeted a national summit on “fairness in austerity”, hosted by Labour mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson.
Council and church leaders came from Manchester, Sheffield, Newcastle and Bristol to attend the summit, entitled “Come Together”.
The protest was called by Liverpool Against Cuts.
Delegations from Manchester, Birmingham and elsewhere joined the demonstration.
A smaller group occupied the chamber of Liverpool town hall.
“We believe there is no fair austerity,” activist Michelle Smith told Socialist Worker.
“In Liverpool, Labour councillors are not just implementing Tory cuts—they are pushing the Tory ideology that austerity is necessary.
“We’re trying to get the message across that there is an alternative to cuts.”
The mayor came to speak to the occupiers.
“We asked him if he believed there could be any fairness in these cuts,” said Michelle.
“He said no. So we asked why he didn’t resign.
“But it’s the same old argument, that it’s better to have Labour implementing the cuts than the Tories themselves.”
