Presidential election results has shaken Austrian politics to the core. In the first round the fascist candidate Norbert Hofer of the Freedom Party came first with over 35 percent of the vote.
The result was a total rejection of the “grand coalition” government. The two ruling parties only received 11 percent each.
A longstanding member of the Green party who welcomes refugees, but is also a neoliberal, came second and will face Hofer in a run-off on 22 May.
The establishment thought that the way to undermine Hofer was to launch their own brutal campaign against refugees.
Entirely predictably this simply strengthened Hofer.
The Social Democrats, determined to secure their place in government, took part fully in the attacks on refugees. They agreed to send soldiers to the borders and construct fences.
The Freedom Party is Euro-fascist. Hofer is a member of the Burschenschaften—German nationalist student societies.
They defend Nazi crimes and the genocide of the Jews.
In parliament Hofer wore a blue cornflower, an identification mark for Austrian fascists in the 1930s.
Anti-fascists now must expose the fascist core of the Freedom Party and build a mass street movement against fascism.
