The Mariam Appeal, set up by George Galloway, also apears in some of the documents. It has already been investigated and given a clean financial bill of health.
In June 2004 the British Charity Commission found that it did not spend money improperly. The appeal was established in 1998 and named after Mariam Hamza, an Iraqi girl suffering from leukaemia.
It aimed to raise funds to enable her to receive treatment abroad, and demanded the lifting of sanctions on Iraq.
A complaint was made to the attorney general’s office, claiming some of the donations were used to pay George Galloway’s travel expenses.
The Charity Commission director of operations, Simon Gillespie, said, “The commission’s thorough inquiry found no evidence to suggest that the large amounts of money given to the Mariam Appeal were not properly used.”
