Dewhirst sit-in in Morocco

Workers at Dewhirst’s factory in Tangiers, Morocco, are staging a sit-in outside the factory gates after the company sacked 486 workers.

The workers are being victimised for protesting against the non-payment of wages to union members.

Dewhirst, a supplier for Marks & Spencer, closed its last factory in Wales in 2002 and transferred production to Morocco.

It pays its Moroccan workers a fraction of what it paid to their British counterparts – from £4.50 an hour to 50p an hour.

Now management plans to shift production to Asia where production costs are even lower. The workers, including many women, are calling for solidarity from British trade unionists.
