Centre left lose Argentinian vote

Right wing candidate Mauricio Macri narrowly won the second round of Argentina’s presidential election last Sunday.

His victory ends the centre left Peronists’ dominance. They’ve held office since the 2001 debt crisis.

Outgoing president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner lost support amid economic crisis and corruption.

Her party ran a right wing candidate to head off attacks from the right, but it gave her supporters less reason to vote.

This is the first time an Argentine presidential election has gone to a second round.

Greek workers demand full pay

Thousands of temporary workers protested outside Greece’s labour ministry on Thursday of last week.

They were hired to fill gaps left by cuts—on worse conditions and lower wages than the workers they replaced.

But most of their contracts are close to expiring.

Local government unions called a short strike to allow workers to join the demonstration. They demand more are hired, with permanent contracts and full wages for all.

Their action followed protests tens of thousands strong on Tuesday of last week. These marked 42 years since the uprising that brought down Greece’s dictatorship.
