A Nazi who stood for the British National Party at the general election could face jail for forging signatures on election nomination papers.
Steven Smith was the BNP candidate in Burnley at June’s general election. In a court case last week he admitted forging signatures on nomination papers for Lancashire County Council elections. The case came to light when a local Labour Party member was horrified to see their name down as a nominee of one of the BNP candidates.
An investigation found that Smith had simply forged at least 12 signatures. After he pleaded guilty last week the case was adjourned until 16 January for pre-sentence report, with magistrates warning the Nazi he could face a jail term.
