A war of words has broken out between Afghan president Hamid Karzai and the British government following his last minute veto of the appointment of Paddy Ashdown as the United Nation’s envoy in Kabul.
Karzai also criticised the British military campaign in the troubled Helmand province.
This follows the expulsion from the country of two British agents involved in brokering talks with the Taliban.
The British were talking to the Taliban but so is Karzai. Afghanistan is a country parcelled up between warlords, drug dealers and the Taliban. Karzai can only hope to survive if he buys support.
Resistance to Western military presence is spreading across the country despite claims by the US and Britain that it has been contained.
