Up to 200 lecturers, students and campaigners took part in a protest outside Downing Street on Friday of last week.

They were campaigning against the government’s cuts in funding for adult education and English for students of other languages (Esol).

The UCU lecturers’ union held a one day conference on the issue, which decided to hold a national day of action next term, as well as a national demonstration.

Pete, a lecturer at Hackney college, said, “Esol lessons are a right, not a privilege.”

An Iraqi who lives in Lambeth told the lobby, “The government’s policy is a disgrace. They spend millions on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – yet they are mean when it comes to education.

“Help for refugees and immigrants was better in the 1970s when I moved to Britain than it is now.”
