US biotechnology company Auxogyn has been granted a patent for basic information about human cells. The data comes from research into IVF treatments.
It follows Myriad Genetics obtaining a patent for DNA sequences in two human genes relating to breast cancer research. Its research took place in public universities.
This is the first time firms have been able to patent such fundamental information about the human body.
