I’m proud of our Poll Tax fight

It’s a relief to hear that Thatcher is dead. But I also feel a sense of dread because the media will claim she was a lovely person.

Thatcher devastated so many lives. She introduced the poll tax and thought it was fair for working class families to pay the same as the lord of the manor. 

She was a tough fighter—but for her class, not ours. She did nothing for working class women. Look at the huge attacks on single parents, particularly on young women bringing up children by themselves. She didn’t speak up for those people.

Look at the differences between male and female wages—she did nothing about that. Instead she wanted to drive all workers’ pay down. If Thatcher has done so much for women, why are there still so few women in parliament? 

Changes that have been won came about because working class women fought for them.

I’m proud to have fought against the poll tax, to have protested and to have gone to prison for three months. I’m proud to have been part of Thatcher’s downfall.
