Over 200 Unison union members struck on Wednesday of last week in defence of their trade union and John McDermott, their Unison convenor, national executive and service group member.
The workers provide housing services in East North East Homes Leeds (ENEHL) a council-owned and funded Arms Length Management Organisation (Almo).
ENEHL has torn up the trade union facilities scheme and imposed a restrictive replacement, which reduces the amount of time John has to represent members both locally and nationally. It also reduces the number of stewards.
John McDermott said, “the strike was both magnificent and moving, hundreds of workers standing for the principle of an independent trade union”
Disgracefully, on Monday morning ENEHL management sent John home from work for using too much union facility time.
