SCOTTISH nursery nurses planned more industrial action this week in their dispute over pay. They are angry that the employers’ body, Cosla, has not come up with a serious pay offer. The nursery nurses announced the next stage in their campaign at a well attended family day held in Glasgow last Saturday.
A series of two-day strikes have been planned. They were set for Tuesday and Wednesday or Wednesday and Thursday of this week in different areas of Scotland. Nursery nurses were also planning to hold a demonstration in Edinburgh on Wednesday of this week to press their claim.

SOME 200 nursery nurses held an angry meeting in Leeds on Thursday of last week. The GMB and Unison unions called the meeting to discuss pay. Nursery nurses employed in education in nearby Bradford and Kirklees as well as those in the London borough of Tower Hamlets have won increased pay through strike action. Now there is a mood to strike in Leeds.
Many nursery nurses who have not spoken in public before spoke out at the meeting. I got an ovation when I called for strike action. An organising committee with three nursery nurses from each union and four branch officers was set up. Action by nursery nurses around the country has given us the confidence to act.
