A post office manager driving a Royal Mail articulated lorry was involved in a fatal accident in Exeter this morning.
The collision, which occurred at 6.30am on the A379 Bridge Road, killed the 53-year old driver of an Astra van, and injured his passenger.
Police have arrested the driver of the lorry, a 46 year-old man from Newton Abbot, on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, and investigations are ongoing. No one has been charged at this stage.
Devon and Cornwall police told Socialist Worker that driving conditions at that time were not unduly hazardous.
A rep at the Exeter mail centre told Socialist Worker that there has been a spate of accidents involving managers and Royal Mail vehicles on strike days.
“Last week several vehicles being driven by managers at Exeter had their wing mirrors broken and one van was backed into a building in Plymouth. While on the picket line we even witnessed a lorry being driven by a manager with its tailgate down – which is potentially extremely dangerous,” he said.
“There are about 20 managers scabbing in our mail centre at the moment. Not many have driven a heavy lorry regularly for a long time, yet they are all out on the roads.”
