Socialists standing in by-elections

Voters were set to go to the polls this week in the Manchester Central by-election and the election for Bristol mayor. The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) is standing candidates in both.

Voters were set to go to the polls this week in the Manchester Central by-election and the election for Bristol mayor. The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) is standing candidates in both.

In Manchester the candidate is Alex Davidson, vice-chair of the PCS union’s North West region. And in Bristol TUSC is standing Unite member Tom Baldwin.

TUSC has also announced its candidate for the Rotherham by-election, set for 29 November, following the resignation of Labour’s Denis MacShane for fiddling his expenses.

Teacher and NUT rep Ralph Dyson, who led a successful strike against job losses at Rawmarsh Community School last year, has pledged to stand as “a workers’ MP on a worker’s wage”.

Meanwhile the Middlesbrough by-election, to be held on the same day, will be contested by John Malcolm, secretary of the Tees, Esk and Wear Valley Health Unison branch.
