The national committee of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) met last weekend to discuss the economic crisis and the party’s response to it.
The committee decided to back a variety of political initiatives, including the TUC’s Put People First demonstration on 28 March, Stop the War’s mobilisations against the G20 and Nato, and the People’s Charter initiative organised by the RMT union and others.
The discussion also stressed the need to build solidarity for militant protests against the recession, such as the occupation of the Waterford Crystal plant in Ireland.
There was a wide-ranging discussion of how anger at the economic situation could erupt in unpredictable ways – and how socialists needed to intervene to shape the response and argue against divisive and nationalist ideas.
