Up to 30,000 Tamils and their supporters marched through London last Saturday demanding the closure of Sri Lanka’s concentration camps.
Tamil civilians have been detained in the camps—which are part funded by Britain—since fighting in the country’s civil war ended in May this year.
At the front of the protest a large banner said, “280,000 still illegally detained”.
Many marchers chanted bitter slogans about UN secretary general Ban
Ki-Moon and his failure to act over the continued detention in unsanitary conditions.
MPs including John McDonnell were among those who addressed the rally in Hyde Park.
The demonstration was a powerful reminder of the need for an ongoing campaign in colleges and workplaces to stop British support for the brutal Sri Lankan regime.
