Tanker drivers to ballot for action

Oil and petrol tanker drivers are preparing to ballot for industrial action next month against attacks on their terms and conditions.

Their Unite union says that the contractors responsible for the delivery of oil and petrol supplies in Britain have been squeezing the terms and conditions of around 3,000 tanker drivers.

The constant transfer of contracts between contractors has led to drivers’ wages, pensions and working conditions being eroded.

The drivers are demanding the introduction of national standards to stop this race to the bottom. But the main companies have refused to meet with the unions.
