Telford police-we can’t solve racism
WEST MERCIA Police have admitted that they are useless at solving racist crimes. Socialist Worker has found out that West Mercia Police are set to hand over the “racial aspects” of the Telford McGowan cases to Scotland Yard’s Racial and Violent Crimes Taskforce. It is virtually unprecedented for one police force to hand over a case to another.
Errol McGowan and his nephew Jason were both found hanged in Telford, Shropshire, against a background of racial harassment and death threats. Yet West Mercia Police jumped to the conclusion that the men committed suicide. Despite figures of recorded racist crimes in Telford shooting up over the past two years, the police have not arrested anyone. The McGowans have also been shown a CCTV video in the possession of West Mercia Police of an alleged racist attack on Errol McGowan by 15 white men. During the attack Errol’s three Asian friends were arrested by the police. None of the attackers were detained.
Errol’s brother Cliff told Socialist Worker, “The police originally told us the tape didn’t prove Errol was being racially harassed because they couldn’t hear what the attackers were saying.”
