A packed fringe meeting organised by the RMT transport workers’ union saw Tony Benn, Unite’s Irish regional secretary Jimmy Kelly and the RMT’s Bob Crow speak against the neoliberal drive in the European Union (EU).
Speakers noted that despite the opposition of the mainstream parties, workers in Ireland had rejected the Lisbon EU treaty.
A number of delegates emphasised the importance of trade unions working together for joint action across the EU.
In particular they highlighted the protest of transport workers from across Europe set to take place in Paris in November.
