BUS WORKERS in Orpington, Kent, walked out on strike on Wednesday of last week in solidarity with a fellow driver. They are employed by Metrobus, which covers routes in the south east and south coast of Britain. The management came down hard on a woman driver after a minor accident while she was driving.
Their promise to discipline her triggered a strike. Workers set up a picket line at Orpington’s Green Street depot and asked others not to cross. They felt the accident was caused by drivers under pressure to do longer and longer hours.
Their unofficial action shut down the whole bus service in the area. They forced the management to retreat and concede that they would not take action against the driver.
