Paper vendors strike in Graz Sixty two street vendors of the Kleine Zeitung newspaper in Graz, Austria, went on strike on Monday of last week after a paper reprinted the offensive caricatures of the prophet Mohammed. For days they had tried to convince the editors that they should avoid such an offensive act.

AUSTRIA'S FAR right Freedom Party saw its support collapse in the country's general election last weekend. The party caused shock across Europe when it won 27 percent of votes in the 1999 election and joined a coalition government with Austria's Conservative Party. Last weekend its support collapsed to 10 percent. The Freedom Party's key figure is Jörg Haider, who has praised Hitler's Nazis in the past.

AUSTRIA IS heading for a general election in November following the collapse last week of the Tory/far right government. The coalition's collapse is the result of a deepening polarisation between left and right.

AUSTRIA'S FAR right Freedom Party was close to entering government as Socialist Worker went to press. It was in talks with the Tory People's Party over forming a coalition government. The prospect of a far right party holding ministerial office in Europe for the first time since 1945 should sound alarm bells. Jörg Haider's Freedom Party is viciously anti - immigrant. It claimed during last autumn's general election campaign that Austria suffered from "Überfremdung" (foreign infiltration). SOME 50,000 people marched in Vienna in Austria on Friday of last week in protest at the Nazi Jörg Haider. It was one of the country's biggest political demonstrations since the Second World War.
