Les Storey
Our comrade Les Storey has passed away peacefully after a long illness, caused in part by a lifetime working as a carpenter and fighting for safer conditions.
A voracious networker and texter, Les spread socialist ideas in all sorts of unusual directions—always with empathy and a sense of humour. Portsmouth and Southampton comrades will remember Les’s contributions in the 1990s.
Les built political and personal relationships with a startling number of Bristol comrades in his couple of years in our SWP branch.
We remember his warm-hearted comradeliness and indomitable sense of humour, which never left him, as well as his dedication to socialist politics.
As a member of our branch committee and Marxism festival organiser last year, he messaged and phoned scores of people, working systematically through lists over many weeks to help bring a record number to the event—nearly 100.
This year he approached those who, like him, could only attend Marxism on Zoom.
An active member of the Unite union retired branch, one of his last messages from hospital recorded his efforts to unionise the hospital staff around him. Bristol branch will sorely miss Les.
