Tunisia’s ousted dictator Ben Ali had stashed cash worth £100 million—behind a bookcase in one of his palaces.

Investigators found the money, together with hidden hoards of gold, diamonds, jewellery and vintage wines behind curtains and paintings.

Mehrez Laamari, a journalist who was present during the search, said, “There were safes embedded in the wall… Inside there were thousands and thousands of high-value banknotes in huge wads.”

Pictures of the loot were shown on state television.

Ben Ali didn’t leave all his wealth behind though—he has carefully been stashing his cash in banks across Britain for years.
