Members of the Amicus section of the Unite union are preparing for a crucial election for general secretary.

The Amicus Unity Gazette, the broad left grouping in the union, is supporting Laurence Faircloth, the union’s regional secretary in the south west, and asking for nominations for him.

His campaign is taking up the issues of the need for lay democracy in the union, support for the merger between Amicus and the T&G union, the need for a campaigning union, and opposition to all discrimination.

Laurence says, “I am a longstanding Labour Party member and I believe the Labour government has not met the aspirations of trade unionists. It’s time to end the practice of giving the national Labour Party millions of pounds every year with no strings attached.”

The election takes place in February but branch and chapel nominations are given in November and December.

Details for the nomination forms: Laurence Faircloth, Branch: Plymouth 0738, Address: 36 Burnham Rd, Highbridge, Somerset TA9 3JH, Membership number: 30835343
