Some 50 English Defence League members joined a British National Party (BNP) stall in Barnsley last Saturday.
They had come to show their support for the fascists as Barnsley Trades Council and Unite Against Fascism marched through the town.
Around 100 anti-fascists turned out to oppose the BNP standing in the Barnsley Central by-election.
For the first time in five years the police had agreed to a trade union demonstration going through the centre of Barnsley on a Saturday.
The demonstration proceeded through the town centre, past the BNP stall, chanting and explaining to shoppers that EDL bully boys had come to defend the BNP.
