Electricians in the Amicus union working at two Hunterston nuclear power stations in Ayrshire, Scotland, have begun a series of strikes due to the removal of a 50 pence per hour enhancement that had been in place for 30 years.
The 40 employees of Balfour Kilpatrick held a two-day strike on 12 and 13 September, and plan to go on strike on Tuesday and Wednesday of each week.
Following the first two-day strike the employers at the nuclear power plant sites have banned overtime for contractors who refused to cross the picket line.
They are also seeking an injunction to stop the planned pickets from being held on the public access road to the two power stations. John Quigley, Scottish regional secretary for the Amicus union said, “Nuclear power station workers in Scotland are not prepared to see their wages cut.
“This is particularly true when there is £42 billion of nuclear decommissioning work to be done across Britain, much of it in Scotland.”
