The GMB union presented a “Scrooge of the Year” award to the courier company CitySprint last month.

The union was protesting over the sacking of London GMB member Paul Whieldon. Paul was sacked by telephone after asking to have Christmas Eve off work to spend time with his partner, whose 40th birthday was on that day.

Terry Flanagan, the GMB professional driver branch secretary, said, “GMB have experienced low standards in the courier industry but we do not expect them to sack people for asking for time off at Christmas.”

Couriers working for CitySprint cycle between 50 and 60 miles a day over a five-day week. They have no sick pay or pension scheme and have had two pay cuts since 2006.
