Tenants in two areas have voted to reject privatisation.
In Waveney, Suffolk, over 67 percent of tenants voted no. Stephen Mynott from the local Defend Council Housing group said, “It’s really brilliant that we have beaten the plans to sell off council homes.
“We have a Tory council, and the local Labour MP and Labour councillors were on our side, basically fighting their own leadership’s policy. We leafleted and held meetings in all the areas covered—some are 30 miles outside Waveney.
“The council lost because tenants did not believe its lies.”
In Cannock Chase, West Midlands, 52 percent voted against the transfer of the council’s 5,700 properties.
Campaigners from around Britain will meet at the Defend Council Housing national conference on 22 May. Tenants’ associations, trade union branches and councillors should send delegations.
