The nuclear industry is dangerous, expensive and corrupt—and the Tories are hellbent on making it even worse.
The Guardian newspaper has revealed how the government’s new energy bill will put us at the mercy of private nuclear firms—letting them take billions from us.
Clause 102 of the bill allows the government to make binding agreements with nuclear power companies on their spending commitments. But should unexpected circumstances arise, companies would pass any extra costs on to us.
The industry’s history is one of “unexpected” leaks, accidents and disasters. Now the Tories will make us pick up the bill for them.
Meanwhile, the government is doing its best to make sure that any new nuclear plants will be unsafe.
It has already outsourced safety inspections for the industry to a new company, the Office for Nuclear Regulation, which is funded by the industry itself.
And the former boss of the firm Powergen, Nick Baldwin, has been put at the head of this body. Powergen has been taken over by E.on—which brags of playing a “leading role” in developing new nuclear plants in Britain.
Unfortunately, some environmentalists, such as George Monbiot, have swallowed the industry’s lies that nuclear is safe, clean and green. In truth the industry is a stinking quagmire that puts our health and our lives at risk. It should be shut down.
