The British government has pledged to stop its funding of detention camps in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan government is expelling James Elder, a senior official in the United Nations Unicef children’s charity, after he spoke out against its treatment of Tamil civilians.

Though the civil war in Sri Lanka has officially ended, two recent events show that the danger for the country’s Tamil minority remains.

Following demonstrations outside parliament by thousands of Tamils, foreign secretary David Miliband went to the capital Colombo and called for a ceasefire. Gordon Brown created a new post for Des Browne as "special envoy" to Sri Lanka.
