Legacy

Leaving the Socialist Workers Party a gift in your will helps us to continue the work of building an organisation committed to replacing capitalism with a world without war, racism and injustice.

Your legacy will sustain a rich tradition of standing up to racism and fascism, and building solidarity for every spark of resistance to this rotten system – a tradition of revolutionary theory and practice that runs from Marx, through the Russian Revolution and resistance to Nazism in all its forms, to opposition to imperialism in the Middle East and support for the Egyptian uprising of 2011 and into the future.

There are two main ways you can leave a gift to the SWP, after you have thought of your family and loved ones:

You can leave a specific sum of money or an item (this is known as a pecuniary legacy).

You can leave a share, or all of, what’s left of the value of your estate once all bills have been paid and other legacies distributed (this is known as a residuary legacy).

If you would like to add a gift to the SWP to an existing will, you can use a codicil. You do not have to write a new will, this just adds a new instruction. Alternatively you can write a new will if your wishes are complicated or if you have not yet written a will.

A suggested form of words for a pecuniary legacy is given below:

“I give the bequest of XXXXXX to the SOCIALIST WORKERS PARTY of PO Box 74955, London E16 9EJ.

If the said Party has changed its name or has amalgamated with or transferred all its assets to any other body, then the gift should be made to the body in its changed name or which results from any such amalgamation.”

Should your solicitor still want something more concrete regarding who would actually take possession of the bequest then you could insert after the address:

“AND I DIRECT that the receipt of the Treasurer or other proper officer for the time being of the said Party shall be a good and sufficient discharge to my Trustees.”

And then continue with the rest of the paragraph as above.
