More than 200 trade unionists and members of different faith groups have signed a unity statement saying that the EDL is not welcome in Dudley.
The EDL plans to march there on Saturday 3 April.
The statement against it reads:
“The EDL has a track record of violence.
“We believe that some of those that plan to march want to emulate Hitler’s Nazis and therefore anyone who differs from them is a potential target.
“We urge all in Dudley to stand together against the racist violence of the EDL.”
Labour councillors Tim Crumpton and Pete Lowe have also added their names to the statement.
Sikh activist Paul Singh says, “We are proud of our diverse community.
“I was born in Dudley and am concerned about the EDL, its lies and hatred.
“I urge all Sikhs to unite with other communities to stand up against racism.”
A number of trade union bodies have backed the call from Unite Against Fascism (UAF) to organise a counter- protest.
They include the Dudley Trades Union Council, and the PCS, NUT, Unison and UCU branches.
The UAF protest, will begin at 11am at the Market Place.
