THE LEFT FIELD fringe meeting was one of the most refreshing to be held at the TUC conference last week. Speakers included Jeremy Dear, Hilary Wainwright and Judith Orr from the Bookmarks socialist bookshop, which is now part of the Left Field collective. Left Field is a new concept growing out of the Workers Beer Company and supported by Ethical Threads and War on Want.
A video was shown from Left Field’s second year at the Glastonbury festival where they organised a stage fusing together culture and left wing politics. The video showed that young people are interested in politics. They flocked to hear Tony Benn on the war, Billy Bragg on the music industry, and Mark Steel and Mark Thomas debating how to fight the Nazis. Jeremy Dear pointed out that the trade union movement desperately needs young people.
Although approaching 40, he is still referred to as a young man! Left Field organisers Steve Pryle and Geoff Martin explained that Left Field is embryonic, but will grow. Left Field needs two things-activists and ideas.
