Young mothers facing eviction from a mother and baby unit have been told they will get no rehousing help from Newham council until bailiffs arrive to evict them.

The Focus E15 mothers—29 young mothers and mothers-to-be with 27 small children— were told the council’s decision at a meeting last week.

Their campaign had forced East Thames housing association to back off from its plan of evicting them by last Sunday. This is after the council withdrew its funding.

Jasmine Stone, resident and founder of the Focus E15 campaign, told Socialist Worker, “It’s really upsetting.

“The council said we would have to take whatever housing is available in Coventry, or wherever. But we can’t just go and live anywhere where we don’t know anyone.”
