A powerful lobby of up to 40 people on Tuesday of last week urged Haringey council in north London to rethink its plans to demolish 130 sheltered homes.
The protest was supported by tenants’ reps and the Haringey Unison union.
Speaking to the council meeting, Paul Burnham of Haringey Defend Council Housing said, “We have come to ask that you invest in sheltered housing for elderly tenants rather than knocking it down and destroying it.
“We need more sheltered housing, not less.”
He pointed out that there are more than 300 people waiting for a place in sheltered accommodation.
Despite lengthy discussion, the cabinet approved the council’s plans on the nod, without even taking a vote.
But the fight goes on. Sheltered housing tenants say, “hands off our homes!”
